Brighton Beach / Tanjung Lobang

Brighton Beach, also known as Tanjung Lobang, is an ideal spot for watching the sunset. The city’s oldest recreational park, it is still popular with joggers, anglers, Tai Chi enthusiasts and children. Two small, beautiful piers here extend out to the ocean and offer excellent views of the coastline and nearby Miri Marina’s unique seahorse lighthouse (the seahorse is the city emblem of Miri). A food centre, Taman Selera, is located here, offering meals over fresh seafood accompanied by marvelous sunset and sea breeze.

Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park

Miri is a popular dive destination due to an abundance of pristine patch reefs. The Miri-Sibuti Coral Reefs National Park, lying at depths ranging from 7 to 30 metres has an average visibility of 10 to 30 metres. There are also some interesting wreck dives. The nearest dive site is a mere ten minutes from the marina bay jetty. Local dive operators offer certification programme as well. The best time to go diving in Miri is from late March through November each year. The diversity and accessibility of corals and other marine life on the reefs is amongst the best in the region.

Lambir Hills National Park

Lambir Hills National Park is probably the world’s most complex and diverse forest ecosystem. Its 6,952 hectares of lowland dipterocarp and heath forests rise to a height of 450m and produce the greatest known level of plant biodiversity on the planet. This provides a home for 237 different species of birds, flying squirrels, wild pigs, gibbons, many different types of monkey, various species of deer, and untold insects and other invertebrates, as well as dozens of international research scientists who are permanently stationed in the park. Lambir also offers fascinating trekking trails leading to sparkling waterfalls and bathing pools scattered about the rainforest, all within 40 minutes drive of downtown Miri.

Niah National Park

Known for the site where a 40,000 year old human remains were discovered, Niah National Park offers jungle walk, Iban longhouse and cave experiences. Niah National Park provides some interesting and impressive sights. The area was a major centre of human settlement as early as 40,000 years ago, and features one of the world’s largest cave entrances, Palaeolithic and Neolithic burial sites and iron-age cave paintings. The nearby Painted Cave houses wall-paintings depicting the boat journey of the dead into the afterlife, along with remnants of “death-ships” on the cave floor – boat-shaped coffins (its contents have been transferred to the Sarawak Museum).

Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club

Close your eyes. Listen. And take a deep breath. For a moment, the hassles of life are overtaken by the soft singing of the cricket, the fresh bellowing air of the countryside. Open your eyes and you will be greeted with a splash of greenery. Forest looms at the horizon. And a golf course carved right out of this tropical jungle.

Miri Handicraft Centre

The Miri Handicraft Centre on Jln Brooke is a fascinating showcase of the ethnic arts and crafts of northern Sarawak. Stalls are run by the individual producers, and craftspeople can often be viewed at work here. Items on sale include Penan mats and basketry, Orang Ulu beadwork and woodcarvings, and a variety of textiles from around the state. Cultural performances are occasionally held at weekends. Open 9am – 6pm daily.

Gunung Mulu National Park – A UNESCO World Heritage

Gunung Mulu is Sarawak’s largest national park (544 sq km), and also Malaysia’s first World Heritage Area, a status it was awarded in 2000. It is most famous for its limestone cave systems, including the world’s largest natural chamber (the Sarawak Chamber), the world’s largest cave passage (Deer Cave) and the longest cave in Southeast Asia (Clearwater Cave). The park’s main attractions are the four show caves (Wind, Clearwater, Deer and Langs Caves), all readily accessible by wooden walkways. Other activities include; a bat observatory and a 480m rainforest canopy skywalk (the world’s longest tree-based walkway).

Canada Hill

Canada Hill is a limestone ridge overlooking the town and offering excellent views of Miri and the surrounding area. The historical Oil Well No. 1, known as the “Grand Old Lady”, is situated on top of Canada Hill. It was here that oil was first struck by Sarawak Shell in 1910. Nowadays the site also houses a very well designed and interesting Petroleum Museum, which traces the history and technological development of the oil and gas industries in Malaysia.

Loagan Bunut National Park

Loagan Bunut features a unique ecosystem based on Sarawak’s largest natural lake (65 ha). The shallow lake usually drains completely when the water in the nearby Tinjar river is low (normally February and late May or early June/July). As the water level subsides, huge flocks of wading birds gorge themselves on fish and other aquatic creatures trapped in the mud. When the lake is dry, plants sprout from the mud and are eaten by insect larvae. When the rains come and the lake fills up, returning fish feed on the larvae, breed in the lake, and the whole cycle starts again.

BARIO VALLEY DISCOVERY

Day 01

Arrive Bario and transfer to The Ngimat Ayu House (TNAH) and after Lunch explore Bario Valley which leads us to Ulung Palang Longhouse , the Schools in Bario and other longhouses in Bario valley, WWII monument, war plan wreckage, perhaps visit the Penan settlement also. Dinner at TNAH. (L/D)

Day 02

Warm at wee hours (4.00 am) for a light breakfast, trek up prayer mountain to enjoy sunset panoramic view of rolling over Bario and brunch at Bario shop upon your. The hike may take 3hrs return. Pick up by 4WD to Pa Umor with your guide. The trek to the salt spring. On the way back stop at pineapple farm to pluck your own pineapple fruit. Return to homestay try your hand on pond fishing while dinner await you at the homestay. (B/L/D)

THE KELABIT HIGHLANDS ADVENTURE

Day 01

Meet on arrival at Bario Airport and transfer to Ngimat Ayu House. Lunch served in local home cooked foods while having a short briefing on the itinerary. Later, explore Bario longhouse and take a short hike to the Penan settlement at Arur Dalan. Free and easy in the evening. Enjoy barbecue dinner at Ngimat Ayu House. Overnight at Ngimat Ayu House. Day 02

Breakfast served at 0730hrs. Pick up at 0830hrs to the trail head at Ra’an Ukat before trekking to Pa Lungan (an idyllic Kelabit village), 15KM through rice fields and montane forest, takes approx. 05-07hrs. Upon arrival in Pa Lungan, visit Batu Ritung and Perupun Rayah where the megaliths found in the village. Overnight at Batu Ritung Homestay. (B/L/D)

Day 03

After breakfast continue trekking to Long Repung, 10KM through montane forest, takes approx. 05-07hrs. Here, experience jungle camping and try your hands on river fishing. At dawn, enjoy the sounds of jungle and the nature scenery. Simple dinner will be prepared by the guide. Overnight at the Hunter Shelter. (B/L/D)

Day 04

Simple breakfast prepared and served by the guide. Continue trekking to Long Midang, 10KM approx. 06-08hrs to check into Indonesia border. The trek takes almost the whole day with some steep hills passing through primary forest. Lunch and dinner will be prepared by the guide. Spend a night at Long Midang Homestay. (B/L/D)

Day 05

After breakfast, continue trekking to the salt spring near Long Midang to witness the traditional way of producing mountain salt. Return to the homestay for an early lunch before trekking to Ba’kelalan. Arriving at Ba’kelalan, a Lun Bawang village. Check in at the homestay / lodge before taking a short tour of the village. Day 03

Breakfast before pickup on 4WD to Pa’ Lungan Village visit ancient megaliths namely batu ritung and Perupun rayeh. Lunch at home in Pa’ Lungan served with local produced delicacies with the famous Pa’ Lungan Bario rice. Drive back to Bario and visit other villages around Bario. Pa’ Umor and Pa’ Ukat. Dinner at the homestay.(B/L/D)

BARIO VALLEY PA'MAIN DISCOVERY

Day 1

Arrive Bario. Transfer to The Ngimat Ayu House. Bario Valley discovery after lunch. Dinner at the Homestay.

Days 2

Breakfast before trek up the Prayer Mountain (3hrs trek). Lunch at The Ngimat Ayu House. Pickup to the trek head to Pa’ Main Village Camp (PMVC) experience a night camping with the local nature guide(sometime called hunters(?)). Dinner at PMVC.

Day 3

Breakfast before trek down the Mada River to have picnic lunch at Long Mada. Enjoy swimming(sometime net fishing) in the Bada River Pool. Trek out from here to be picked up on 4WD to The Ngimat Ayu House Bario. Dinner at the homestay.

Day 4

Breakfast. Trek to National Park to enjoy nature the pristine forest of Pulung Tauh National Park, witnessing some of the oldest tropical rainforest with your packed meals for a picnic lunch near the Ukat River. Trek ends at the scenic Pa’ Ukat Village. Pickup on 4WD from Pa’ Ukat Village to TNAH Bario for dinner before urgent to the Ulung Palang longhouse to experience a Kelabit cultural night and participate in traditional dance and games with the locals and being served with local refreshments.

Day 2

Breakfast will be serve at 8.00am before trek through Merariew Valley into the wilderness of Pulung Tauh National Park with your packed lunch to witness the most pristine rainforest with the old big trees remanding here. Your will exit at Ukat River on the other side to enjoy the refreshing clean water in this stony river while having lunch picnic at it scenic banks. A 4wd will pick you up at the trek end in Pa’ Ukat village. Dinner await you at TNAH.

Day 3

Breakfast at 8.00am before pickup by 4WD to Pa’ Umor village to trek out to the salt spring perhaps to witness the Kelabit traditional way of processing their Mountain salt and stop at pineapple farm on your way back for lunch at the homestay. Free at leisure or trek up the Prayer mountain to enjoy the spectacular panoramic view of roiling hills over Bario valley. Dinner at TNAH.

Gunung Mulu National Park (UNESCO World Heritage)

The story of Mulu started so long ago, in a time span that is difficult for us humans to grasp – 40 million years ago – and to make it even more intriguing, the Mulu story began deep under the sea.
The mystery and magic of Borneo has lured the cream of the scientific world since it was first discovered. In 1978 the Royal Geographical Society launched probably one of the biggest multi-disciplinary expeditions ever to Mulu. Prior to this, the Sarawak Government recognizing the special qualities of Mulu, had gone on to gazette it a National Park in 1974. The magic caught on in 2000, and Mulu was declared an iconic World Heritage Area, at 55,000 hectares, the biggest National Park in Sarawak.
The stories of the sandstone summit of Mulu peak are even older – 60 million years old. The massive limestone formation, formed deep under the sea, was uplifted to form the landscapes of Mulu, of which the peaks of Api, Benarat and Buddha are so prominent. But let’s start with the limestone that is responsible for the special World Heritage honors– gigantic caves!

Headhunter's Trail

The 11.3km trail, that traces the route taken by headhunters of yesteryears, is a great way of entering or leaving Gunung Mulu National Park. The more popular way is leaving from the National Park headquarter and ending in Limbang. From here one can either fly back to Miri or take an overland trip to Brunei Darulsalam or Kota Kinabalu. Whichever way you choose, this hiking trip is an excellent introduction to the rivers and rainforest and gigantic caves of Mulu and the added attraction of a longhouse visit.
